The Geeky Side of Fats
There is a limited number of people around the world so conscious of what they are eating that they single out “fats” as a villainous character out to get them. Well, not all “fats” are bad guys. You’d be surprised to know that fats are not just flavorful, but they are also necessary to a healthier, balanced, and well-rounded diet. Fats found in the food we eat is subdivided into a trans fat, saturated and unsaturated. Trans fat is a kind of fat mostly found in processed, fried, and baked kinds of food. It has very little nutritional value, they are now being phased out in the global food market/supply by the WHO (World Health Organization). Circling back, it’s saturated and unsaturated fat that you want to pay attention to. Saturated fat is mostly found in dairy products like butter, cream, cheese, whole milk, and shortening. It can also be sourced from palm oil and coconut oil as well as in the fatty parts of your beef, lamb, chicken, and pork. They are called saturated because they are highly “saturated”‘ by hydrogen atoms in a jammed packed single bond chemical make-up. It is because of these that most saturated fats are in solid form or state at room temperature.
Currently, the world is in a debate on how healthy or unhealthy saturated fats are for people. In some cases, they say that your body needs a fair amount of saturated fat to help you with your cholesterol levels. Some, however, consider saturated fats as a factor in increasing LDL or bad cholesterol levels. Moving forward, the difference between saturated and unsaturated lies in the saturation of the hydrogen atoms within the chemical bond. Unsaturated fats, unlike the single bond of saturated fats, have what scientists call a double bond occurring not just once but even at multiple times. They are also more often than not are in the liquid state compared to saturated fats that appear to be solid. Unsaturated fats have two sub-categories namely monounsaturated fats and polyunsaturated fats. Monounsaturated fats only have a single double bond in its chemical make up. Polyunsaturated fats have multiple double bonds in their chemical structure. We need fats in our body, whether it be saturated or unsaturated, monounsaturated, or polyunsaturated fats. Because not having some isn’t a balanced diet anymore and might hurt our body someday.
The Omega in Unsaturated Fats
The world of fats is a bit complex than a simple stick of butter. Under the categories of unsaturated fats, we find the Omega group of fatty acids. The most commonly heard Omega fatty acid is the Omega-3 for its heart health benefit, but there are others like the Omega-6,7 and 9. The numbers in the Omega fatty acids signify the distance of where the first double carbon bond appears in the long methyl chain. So if it’s Omega-3, then there are three more Carbon atoms before the double carbon bond.
The heart-healthy fatty acid, as described by experts, Omega-6 fatty acid, is known to be both linoleic and arachidonic acid. This fatty acid can be found in nuts, seeds, and vegetable oil for linoleic, and eggs and meat are the known sources of arachidonic acid. Omega-9 is a monounsaturated fatty acid and is mostly considered to be non-essential because it is found to occur in the body as well. Essential fatty acids are those fatty acids that do not naturally occur in the body and therefore must be outsourced.
Omega-7 Fatty Acid
Here is the deal, Omega-7 fatty acids or known in the scientific community as Palmitoleic acid. It may not be so common, but it is still an important addition to any one’s diet. It can be found in certain species of fish like salmon, herring, anchovies, and mackerel. It can be found also in some kinds of nuts, much like macadamia. Avocado and lard are also a good source of Omega-7 fatty acids. But the biggest discovery the world has made is that Omega-7 is richly sourced in the pulp of sea buckthorn berries. They are part of the monounsaturated categories of fats and are found to be present or seen on the skin and in fat tissues of the body. This fatty acid is considered to be a rare kind of treasure because it is scarcely sourced from the plant and animal kingdoms. Apart from this, not much is truly known about Omega-7 except that it is a great additive to Omega-3 making an Omega-10 fatty acid which is still under scrutinized observation for further outputs.
Omega 7 Benefits On Skin And Weight Loss
In a nutshell, omega7 is said to have the following effects on the body once consumed. It can help in developing insulin-sensitive muscles and improve the health of the GI tract by aiding in the repairs of the mucous membranes found in the GI tract. It has been said, that it can increase and improve the functions of the pancreas producing insulin. It helps reduce plaque found to build up in the arteries, preventing blockage of the arteries, which might help in countering future heart attacks. In passing the omega-7 can also be credited in lowering the amount of cholesterol in the body.
The omega-7 is a fatty acid that can help improve metabolism by helping the body use up stored fats as fuel for your activities, burning fats as energy fuel cells. It also is found to be able to impede the appearance of new fat molecules and lower your need to feed or lessens your appetite. A great and healthy addition to your diet, don’t you think so?
On another note, when it comes to promoting skin health, omega-7 is known to be a good helper in keeping the skin, nails, and hair moisturized, not just on the outside, but it moisturizes these from the inside out giving it that healthy and shiny glow. Since it is not like any other topical lotion out in the market, rather ingested through supplements or food rich in omega-7, the effects on the skin are a lot more visible and noticeable after a few or several doses of the supplement or several servings of omega-7 rich food. But the effect is far greater than any lotion because it moisturizes from within by helping coat and nurtures mucous membranes of the body, lubricating each cell, giving a more permanent healthy glow.
All in all, omega-7 is a whole new venture the world is gearing up towards. Make sure you have a ticket for this adventure, and you wouldn’t want to miss this new health wonder.
